The feature set is a complete one that offers everything the majority of VPN users need. OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and IkeV2 are all there to give you the choice in choosing the encryption you need for your online activities. The desktop clients Total VPN developed are lightweight, quick run smoothly. The Windows client – that we conducted our tests on – is of high quality, though from a technical standpoint you do not have advanced features. Still, what you have works very well and Total VPN has almost no wait when you connect to a server. Testing on various streaming channels including Hulu, Netflix and Spotify gave us satisfying results with the various settings and scenarios we tried.
Total VPN brings a number of extra features and upgrades to the table to complement their Premium package. The first such feature is priority support. You can invest in receiving the quickest form of help possible, before anyone else. Now it is true that there are not queues of people at the moment for Total VPN, as they are a new organization, but later, this upgrade can become highly relevant. Secondly, there are additional connections to be unlocked. Total VPN supports gaming consoles, flashed routers, and more.
Then, there is a complete eBook you can acquire to further educate yourself about online safety. The last upgrade you can purchase is interestingly access to better quality servers. As you will observe below, speeds are not the strongest side of Total VPN, and this tactic is the only one we find a bit dodgy. We understand that an extra source of income is necessary for up and coming companies, but since the basic statistics are not that impressive, it might be worth making quality server standard.
On a side note, we noticed that the official website is structured in a way that when you are logged in, you cannot access websites that you otherwise can while being logged out, such as the features page or the upgrades page. Other than this, everything is very well presented.
Like most other participants on the market, Total VPN also offers unlimited bandwidth on their premium package. The free version however has caps on both bandwidth and the data you are allowed to work with. The good news is that if you go Premium, you get access to 30+ countries and extensive server support, particularly for the USA. In any client software or application, you are presented with a world map to further help you getting around. So the general circumstances are given for an enjoyable VPN connection. But, being a new company, there is a minor case of chicken pox here.
In our opinion, the only significant weakness of Total VPN is the lack of connection speeds. We did not get the best results during probing, despite using the quickest form of encryption, PPTP.
There are several types of encryption available for you to protect your VPN connection with. Interestingly enough, we were only presented with PPTP and IKEv2 in the Windows client. As stated above, speeds were not too impressive, so we resorted to working with the least safe, but quickest security – PPTP. Other than these, you can also utilize OpenVPN and L2TP, though our general impression is that only the super charge-upgraded servers support the latter two.
In terms of privacy protection, Total VPN is standard. Similarly to most VPN companies, they do store some information. Your personal and account data are kept to have some means of contact, and the company also logs your connection timestamps, and authentication info. The websites you visit and the content you down- and upload though are not stored.
OS, Device Support
Device support for Total VPN is a bit better than average, though keep in mind that to get the service to work on gaming consoles or an Android smartwatch for example, you need to purchase a specific upgrade on top of the regular availability. The latter includes Windows (from XP to Win10) and Mac OS X for operating systems. Mobile devices are better served, with Android and its tablet version, along with the iPad and iPhone awaiting VPN usage. Since Total VPN is still rapidly developing, they are in the process of making their services available on Chromebook. Yes, this means that all of the above get their respective applications or clients.
There are two distinct packages offered by Total VPN. The first, free version has no time limit on it, allowing you to have a free VPN account as long as you wish. You can connect to three countries with one device at a time. The only problem here is that it is restricted in terms of bandwidth and also has a data cap. Nevertheless, this is an excellent opportunity to at least try out the service.
The paid plan has the premium qualities: unlimited bandwidth and data traffic, and three devices to be linked to a given account. You also get access to the full country and server roster. One month of Total VPN here costs $12.44. However, if you opt for the annual duration, you get a $6.95/mo price, which is 45% off – this is a great discount. Nevertheless, we feel that at this point in time, Total VPN is a bit expensive for what you get in return.
You have three payment options to conduct business with: Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
There are three sections reserved for customer service on the official Total VPN website. The help center includes a 24/7 live chat, a knowledgebase with all the specific details for the VPN service, a ticket submission option and the FAQ. Then, there is Total VPN’s social media presence, spearheaded by a blog, but the company can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Lastly, you can also write an e-mail to establish contact. This means that Total VPN does not have more rare or direct methods of help like a telephone line or remote desktop-oriented communication. This is not anything to frown upon, though – you get quality service for a new company.
To sum up, Total VPN is off to a very decent start. Even though they have been in the business for a short amount of time, things already started resembling the top VPN organizations. We would like to praise the general environment in which you can be a subscriber; all information is presented to you in an accessible and understandable manner. Country selection is also fair, possibly too much for some people already. The free account with no time limit is also something to examine closely. Even though speed values are low and prices aren’t the best, we theorize this is a part of the first few footsteps Total VPN must take to establish a solid foundation.
