SaferVPN has only been around since 2013, and yet it has already established a solid VPN service with a rich set of features that is expanding further quickly. Their apps have seen constant improvements in SaferVPN’s aim to make the service as simple to use as possible, and the iOS app we should be seeing really soon is going to be another result of this striving. The server network with about one hundred servers in 24 locations is below the average we’re seeing with VPN providers. But like a true top VPN provider, SaferVPN runs its own network of VPN servers and stays away from leasing servers also in use by other (VPN) companies.
With a smart DNS solution to be released soon and second to none customer service we praised in our review of SaferVPN, this Israeli company is one of the driving forces pushing the VPN scene forward to make the internet open and safe again. In its mission to do this, SaferVPN is putting work into a couple of non-profit initiatives just as admirable as we learned in this interview with the company’s CEO and co-founder Amit Bareket.
Why did you found SaferVPN?
Sagi and I founded SaferVPN because we saw a huge demand for VPN in the market. Nowadays, more than 60 countries have some extent of internet censorship. Yet the internet is such a powerful tool when it comes to freedom of expression, education and connecting with family and friends. We see access to the internet as a basic freedom that everyone should have and this was a driving motivation in our founding of SaferVPN.
Moreover, our VPN service provides a much-needed guarantee of privacy for our users. Even if you do have internet access, many connections are not secure and without a VPN, surfers on the web are subject to infringement on their privacy from hackers and snoopers. So in short, we believe that everyone should not only have access to the web, but also be able to enjoy and use the web safely and without fear or worry.
Why should we rely on SaferVPN, and not another VPN service provider?
First of all, SaferVPN is one of the fastest VPN services around. We know that a fast connection is absolutely paramount when choosing a VPN service so we have engineered our worldwide VPN network to guarantee the fastest connection possible.
But what good is a fast connection if you can't navigate the service? At SaferVPN, we've taken the utmost care to make sure our VPN service is not only lightning fast and reliable, but also easy to use. SaferVPN offers state-of-the-art apps for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. We've designed our apps with the user in mind so our users have flawless internet access with just one click.
Our users are very important to us so we go the extra mile to ensure they have a seamless experience. Our service reps are available 24/7 for any of our customers' needs.
What are the benefits of being headquartered in Israel as a VPN provider?
Israel is a leader in technological innovation and home to some of the brightest minds and engineers. And Tel Aviv, where our offices are based, is the world's third best place for technology business. So here we're not only exposed to the latest developments and cutting edge technology, but we're also motivated to constantly think outside the box and push the limits of what appears to be possible. Moreover, Israel is a place that embraces freedom of expression, freedom of speech and of course, a free internet. These are values that are very important to us and very significant to what our company stands for.
Can you tell us a bit more about the SaferVPN routers?
Together with FlashRouters we offer preconfigured and branded VPN routers. There are many advantages to using a SaferVPN router. First off, the simplicity. You don't have to install any additional software or mess with any settings on your devices. Just plug and play and you'll be ready to go.
Secondly, using a SaferVPN router will allow you to connect through to all of your devices including Xbox, PS4, Nintendo Wii, Apple TV, Roku and so much more. And, last but not least, the router allows VPN functionality for the entire home. This means all devices connected to your wireless home or office networks can enjoy the benefits of SaferVPN.
How come your number of server locations is somewhat more modest than that of most other VPN providers?
Our approach is unique in the VPN industry – we own, engineer and manage our VPN network – with a focus on reliability, high availability and speed. Other VPN providers often use third party companies to host and manage their VPN servers, but we don’t. We are constantly working on adding new locations, and for every new location, we give a lot of consideration and thought, performing stress tests and making sure we select the best place possible to host our servers.
Currently, all the most commonly used server locations are covered. But of course, as a customer-oriented company, we are very attentive to our customers’ voices. For any special location requests we encourage customers and potential users to please send us an email at support@safervpn.com.
How can we save extra on the cost of our SaferVPN account?
Well, just tell your friends! We have a referral program that allows you to save on your subscription by recommending your service to your friends.
Also, if you select our yearly package you can save up to 35%. Plus, we offer great promotions during the holidays and special events – so keep a lookout!
Should we expect a native iOS app for SaferVPN soon?
Yep, it's already in the works and should be out in just a week or two.
Which new releases, updates may we expect in the near future?
We have some exciting developments based on VPN technology that will allow our users even more accessibility and simplicity than before. We've also got a smart DNS solution in the works, coming out soon.
And, along with our technology, we'll be continuing to expand our work in the realm of freedom of speech and human rights, working together with NGO Advancing Human Rights to allow more dissidents in closed societies access to the free web.
How do you personally use your VPN account?
Personally, I find our VPN most useful when connecting to public Wi-Fi hotspots and securing my internet activities. And of course, I don't mind being able to watch some Parks and Recreation every now and then.
Which advice do you have to protect our privacy, data online other than using a VPN?
I would recommend:
- Picking a strong password. This is key to making sure your accounts aren't hacked. Use a variety of characters and numbers, or a strong password generator to make sure your passwords are hack-proof.
- Secure your online services with two-factor authentication. Better safe than sorry. This allows you to be completely sure that your accounts remain private via use of a special access code.
- And for some more helpful recommendations, we've got a great blog post with additional tips and tricks for browsing the web safely.
Do you have a neat tidbit about SaferVPN you’d like to share?
As a company, we value freedom and security both online and offline. We currently work with NGOs to provide VPNs to political dissidents, to help them get around autocratic censorships. In fact, we were recently mentioned for this work in New York Times. We believe we have an obligation to help those who aren’t able to speak up and like to do our part in promoting this kind of justice.
